On the afternoon of November 18, 2019, An Giang University, VNU-HCM, coordinated with the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to organize the opening of the "American Hangout".

There came to the ceremony Ms. Marie C. Damour, US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van Dat - Vice Rector of An Giang University.

The "American Hangout" was set up under the annual small-scale support program of the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City (named Public Affairs Small Programs Proposal). This learning space was located at An Giang Library and provides over 100 printed books, 300 electronic books on culture, society, economy and science and technology of the United States. It was also the venue for an interactive learning model with the support of modern equipment such as Internet-connected TVs, electronic readers and laptops. The "American Hangout " was expected to directly connect the counseling programs of the American Education Centers in Vietnam to contribute to the promotion of American education, helping AGU staff, lecturers, and students realize their dreams of studying abroad.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Associate Prof. Dr. Tran Van Dat, Vice Rector of An Giang University emphasized that " American Hangout" would create many activities and services to help students improve their English and social skills, creating more opportunities in seeking jobs in the international environment. The meeting would provide free English language learning support services and conduct 10 American cultural activities with organizational support from the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City and English language experts in the Mekong Delta.

At the meeting, Ms. Marie C. Damour expressed her pleasure to visit An Giang University to co-organize the opening of  the "American Hangout". She hoped that through the books about the United States, English learning materials and American cultural programs at this "American Hangout", lecturers, students and people in An Giang would use this space to freely exchange ideas and knowledge, improve English and learn more about the United States.

On this occasion, the Consulate General's office also introduced US scholarship programs such as YSEALI Programs, SEAYLP (Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program 2020) and technological games in the form of the STEM model.
