From 20/6 – 28/6/2018, the Resource Center for Community Development (RCCD), An Giang University (AGU) collaborated with Department of Nursing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to organise the Service Learning program for 27 PolyU students and 14 AGU students.
The program aimed to provide PolyU students with practical experience in applying their knowledge to solving current health issues in underprivileged regions. The students also collected data on local people’s health status and experienced living in rural disadvantaged areas. AGU students were well-trained in health issues and medical equipment to be volunteers and interpreters in the program.
The program activities took place at An Giang University and My Hoa Hung Commune. At An Giang University, the students participated in lots of games and cultural exchange activities as well as were trained about service learning by Dr. Sijian of PolyU. The students were also informed of the effects of the environment on people’ lives and the epidemic management by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tai - Head of the Medical Center of My Hoa Hung Commune.
At My Hoa Hung Commune, the students from PolyU and AGU enjoyed homestay experiences. The students visited local households to instruct them on health protection, offered gifts to 80 families, and cooked nutritious dishes during their homestay period. The local people warmly welcomed the students and thanked them for useful information on health protection. The students also paid a visit to Ton Duc Thang Historical place and returned to AGU for the closing ceremony. The program provided the students with useful and practical information.
